Garrett Mason is a true bluesman at heart. He was raised in Truro, Nova Scotia, by his mother, Pam, and father, Canadian blues legend the late Dutch Mason. Garrett's quest to become a musician started at a very early age - his first foray with the guitar came at just four years old, when he found an old guitar with only one string.

"I didn't even know what it was, but I knew it was cool", he says.

His father taught him how to play "Hit the Road, Jack" and the Peter Gunn theme song.

"We never did get the rest of the strings put on that guitar".

Garrett eventually lost interest and didn't pick up the guitar again until he was 13 years old, when he first heard the music of Albert Collins, BB King and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

"When I heard those guys, I knew it was something I had to do".

Garrett played his first live show in his hometown of Truro, Nova Scotia, on New Year's Day 2000, playing guitar in his father's band, The Dutch Mason Blues Band. Since then, Garrett has been on the road, playing music non-stop with great success, and in 2004, he stepped out from the supporting role in his father's band to take center-stage writing and performing his own songs. Shortly after, he was approached by the CBC with an offer to produce his debut album.
I'm Just a Man was released in 2005, and features Garrett's unmistakable voice, suggesting a performer beyond his years, his aptitude for strong original compositions, and his masterful guitar skills. Garrett's talent and hard work were rewarded that year with the Juno Award for "Best Blues Album", Maple Blues Award for "New Artist of the Year" and Canadian Independent Award for "Favourite Blues Artist".

Although his dad was forced to stop playing guitar before Garrett was born, due to crippling arthritis in his hands, he taught Garrett the structure of the Blues and was an obvious influence on the resulting sound - a blend of musical genres and influences Garrett calls "funk-a-billy-blues-soul".

Surrounded by his father's peers, Garrett has had the benefit of hearing and learning from a wide variety of musical talent. The late Rick Jeffery was a great inspiration whether playing together in the Dutch Mason Blues Band or learning from Rick's unique style and performances with his own band. The combination of his father's advice, Jeffery's guidance and his own natural talents provide that special brew for Garrett to become the musical influence he is destined to be.

Now 25, Garrett has shared the stage with several of his musical heroes over the past couple of years, including blues legends B.B. King and Junior Watson, to name a few. Garrett is currently touring across Canada with his talented band, including Mike Farrington on bass and Damien Moynihan on drums, while recording his sophomore album set to be released early 2008.

Also, a quick reminder that only a few tickets (@ $30) remain at Tidewater Books for dinner plus the Latin Groove concert at George's, which takes place this coming Saturday (March 1). Catbird has released 50 additional tickets for the music-only portion of the show ($15)...dinner starts at 6.30 and the music at 9 pm. The response for this has been overwhelming and we urge you to get tickets prior to show to avoid disappointment.

'hope to see you at the shows.

Regards,

Tantramarsh Blues Society (TBS)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Toronto, ON. Tuesday, February 19, 2008

The undisputed master of Persian classical song, singer Mohammad Reza Shajarian, last appeared at a sold-out show at Roy Thomson Hall on March 18, 2006, as part of the "Masters of Persian Music" show. He is a living legend and one of the most recognizable voices in Iran – sweet, soulful and dynamic. Born in 1940 in the city of Mashhad, Shajarian started singing at the age of five under the supervision of his father. At the age of twelve he began studying the traditional classical repertoire (radif) with the great masters of the tradition, including Ahmad Ebadi, Esmaeel Mehrtash and Abdollah Davami, from whom he learnt the most ancient tasnifs (songs). He began singing professionally in 1959 at Radio Khorasan and has been a staple of Iranian radio, television and recordings ever since, leading the Persian classical music renaissance that took hold after the 1979 revolution. In 1999 UNESCO presented him with the prestigious Picasso Medal in France, and in 2000, the Ministry of Culture in Iran declared him “Best Classical Vocalist.” A series of US re-issues of Shajarian’s classic Iranian recordings will launch this year with the release of “Bidad” on World Village/Harmonia Mundi USA.
A co-production with Small World Music Society.

The Buena Vista Social Club was a members-only club in Havana that held dances and musical activities, becoming a popular place to meet and play during the 1940s. In the 1990s, it inspired a recording made by Cuban musician Juan de Marcos González and American guitarist Ry Cooder with traditional Cuban musicians, some of whom were veterans who had performed at the club during the height of its popularity. The recording, Buena Vista Social Club, became an international success, and performances and interviews were captured on film for an Academy Award-nominated documentary of the same name. The success of the album and film sparked a revival of international interest in traditional Cuban music and Latin American Music in general.
Omara Portuonda is the female vocalist featured in the film; Robert Fonseca joined BVSC on the piano in 2001 at the age of 26.

MICHIGAN CITY VANDALS NEED MORE CASH FOR HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

Hey, Everyone.

I hope you are all having a great New Year so far! Many of you know that my band, Michigan City Vandals, released an album on 11/3/07 and are donating 100% of its sales to build a Habitat forHumanity house. We are experiencing really good sales and making a dent in our goal of $80,000, but still have over $65,000 to go.

I am asking that you take a moment to go to our site and buy the record. It is $10 and 100% of the sales will go toward the house. The studio time, live recording, mixing and most of the duplication have all been donated, allowing us to put almost all the money towards the home. Also, may I ask that you please forward this to anyone whom you feel would like to help by donating cash or purchasing the record. Direct them to www.michigancityvandals.com.

Once the record is purchased, we get an email with the buyer's contact info and then once we are ready to break ground, we will be able to notify everyone so that you can come help with the build if you like. Thanks so much! We really feel we can accomplish this with everyone's help.

We recently started recording and working with a small label inChicago and they are helping us book shows, so if you want a hard copy of the record with the artwork, you can get them from us at shows or just hit me back with an email and I can mail one directly to you.

Thanks again & I hope to see you all soon at one of our upcoming gigs in Chicago, ILL, or throughout Michigan.

NIAGARA RHYTHM SECTION'S SAT. NIGHT "MUSICAL IMPROV" - MAR. 1

This week's featured guest: SAT. MARCH 1 - GAYLE ACKROYD & ED KOPALA

The Anchorage, 186 Ricardo St. Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON, 905-468-2141

Every Saturday night 9:30 pm - no cover

This week we welcome the long awaited return of our good buddies, Gayle & Ed. Gayle's a talented songwriter and accomplished singer and guitarist. Her music, which encompasses blues, country, folk, zydeco, southern soul, and rock 'n 'roll influences, has established Gayle as one of the most compelling artists on the Canadian roots music scene.

Ed's an amazing guitarist and really good pal.

It's hard to believe we've now been playing at the Anchorage every Saturday night since November 2003. Over four years. Yikes! Two of our very first guests were Gayle and Ed, and we're always very pleased to welcome them back.

Here's what Toronto keyboard player Michael Stevenson says about Gayle:

"A voice as pure as the driven snow and as sweet as honey...heartfelt songs of passion and hope that virtually everyone will relate to...guitar playing that ties them both together and makes them shine...a truly charming and captivating live presence."

UK PRODUCER KEN NELSON WORKING WITH ALANA LEVANDOSKI

Sessions begin tomorrow (Feb. 26th) in Kelwood, Manitoba (Canada) , for Alana Levandoski's long-awaited second album. The Canadian singer/songwriter is recording with famed UK producer Ken Nelson in Kelwood at a local church. This will be immediately followed by sessions at the world-class Parr Street Studios in Liverpool, England.

After several years working on demos and independent artists such as the Hellfire Sermons and Ruthless Rap Assassins, Nelson achieved success with Gomez, and world-wide success with the first Coldplay recording. He did a further two albums with the band. He has also worked with Badly Drawn Boy, Howling Bells, The Charlatans, Echo & The Bunnymen, Kings Of Convenience, Orange Lights, Ray LaMontagne, Feeder, Skin, Snow Patrol, Polly Paulusma and Paolo Nutini. He has won three US Grammy awards, two Mercury Music Prizes, and was Music Week magazine's 'Producer Of The Year' in 2003.

Leading up to her second album, Alana Levandoski co-wrote with such leading country and roots-styled American songwriters as Quinn Loggins, Sam Ashworth, James LeBlanc, Rebecca Lynn Howard, Rachel Thibodeau, and Gary Nichols. She also co-wrote with Sylvia Tyson, Colin Cripps, and Simon Wilcox in Canada.

Alana's reputation as a significant international singer/songwriter was initially bolstered by her debut album, Unsettled Down, released by Rounder Records in Canada in 2005 and in Europe in 2006.

Alana first performed in the UK and Europe in early 2006 with Dar Williams, Lynn Miles and Caroline Herring, as well as Jess Klein. She returned to the UK in 2006, opening for the Elana James Trio, and fellow Canadians, Blue Rodeo. She did a tour of Ireland and England in 2007 with fellow Canadian, Lynn Miles, in Canada. Alana toured nationally with the Corb Lund Band, as well as doing dates with Stephen Fearing, Randy Bachman, the Arrogant Worms, and Tanya Tucker.

Reviews of Unsettled Down were plentiful. She was profiled in numerous European publications, including Maverick and in such Canadian magazines as Maclean's and Penguin Eggs as well as the street papers, The Georgia Strait in Vancouver, and Now magazine in Toronto.

PRESS RELEASE - February 2008

For Immediate Release:

Singer/songwriter Sebastian Agnello releases Take Your Lumps

Even veteran Sebastian fans have a little trouble figuring out what this feisty fixture of Canadian anti-culture is going to throw at them next. The uninitiated haven’t a chance. So before you fire up Take Your Lumps, Seb’s latest collection of headline news, radical views and his own dyspeptic muse, have a glance at the back liner panel - some notable quotes from a few of Seb’s favourite pundits and philosophers. "Contrary? Yes. Contentious? Certainly. But sensible? Absolutely! Welcome to Sebastian’s worldview. And if it doesn’t follow the path of 'conventional wisdom', it’s because convention ain’t got nuthin’ to do with wisdom.”

Take Your Lumps, Seb’s ninth self-produced CD, presents 11 new songs from the man the politically correct love to hate. It jumps musical borders from country to punk to folk and rock without sacrificing a shred of credibility. Listen to the lead-in track, “I’m Uma Pemmaraju”. Here Sebastian takes the newscaster’s top stories and dumps them into a jaunty, guitar-driven romp that belies the awful weight of the nightly headlines. At a time when a "protester"’ ought to close ranks with the popular tide of opinion, Seb tells us to "Stop Picking On America" ("and America will stop picking on you").

“Me & God” suggests that God sides with a humble country picker and if He had His druthers He’ d be playing a Gibson like He intended decent people ought to. What the hell?

We get vignettes of girl troubles (“T.O. Girl Of My Youth”), family troubles (“I Love My TV”), politician’s troubles (“Government Policy”), neighbours’ troubles (“Neighbours”), political bigotry troubles (“Liberal Myths, Conservative Lies”) and the trouble we all have figuring out a troubling world. It’d be bad news all ’round without Seb’s disarming wit and wry sense of fair play that mirrors life’s magnificent ironies.

“Take Your Lumps” is vintage Agnello. Seb is not deliberately controversial; it’s just the way he’s made.

----------------------------------------------------
MARTY MURRAY - UPCOMING GIGS

Howdy, All.

Just to let everyone know, I will be playing this coming Friday night, February 22nd, at Clancy's Sports Bar on Stanley Ave. here in Niagara Falls (ON), from 8 til midnight.
Saturday night I will be doing my usual 7 to 11 gig at Coco's in the Holiday Inn By The Falls on Murray Hill, right across from the new casino.

The last two Sundays I've done the singer-songwriter matinee at the Jordan House in Jordan, ON, with Michael Wainwright of the Caverners and Flat Broke. So far there has just been me and him, but anyone with original songs is welcome to come out and play them.
Good beer and good food is on hand, also, plus a wonderful sounding room - probably the best-sounding venue in the entire Niagara region. The matinee runs from 2 til 3:30, but can be exdended if more artists show up to perform their songs. I hope to make it out there again this coming Sunday.

Things are picking up and I have a lot of gigs booked for March, so please stay tuned.

Take care,

Marty

TANNIS SLIMMON RELEASES LUCKY BLUE (WITH MANSA SISSOKA)

A Toronto 'Lucky Blue' release with Mansa Sissoko, plus news of the film of our trip to Mali, West Africa!!

Hello, friends!

As the subject of this message indicates, there are alot of exciting things to tell you, but in a nutshell....I'm releasing my very lucky new album in Toronto just before the long-awaited film about our trip to Mali is broadcast on TV. Mansa Sissoko, the star of that film is coming to celebrate with us, so we're doing a double bill. It's going to be a blast! I'm including the press release so that you have all the information. Feel free to pass it on to anyone who you think might be interested. And many thanks for your precious time! Cheers!

Tannis

P.S. I'm attaching a picture of one of my favourite characters I met as we arrived in Mansa's village.

Press Release

In celebration of the release of LUCKY BLUE, the second album by prairie-born, Guelph-based, roots singer-songwriter Tannis Slimmon and the up-coming Bravo Channel broadcast of "Road To Baleya", starring Malian griot Mansa Sissoko:

What: Musical double bill concert with Tannis Slimmon & Mansa Sissoko

When: Sunday, March 2nd, 2008. Showtime is 8:00 pm

Where: Hugh's Room, 2261 Dundas St. W., Toronto, ON

How Much: $18 advance, $20 at the door

Tickets: Available at the door or by calling Hugh's Room (416) 531-0664

For dinner reservations or concert tickets, please call Hugh's Room or visit:

www.hughsroom.com/reservations

Tannis Slimmon, a long-time participant in Guelph's active independent music scene, is doing the Toronto launch of her second album, Lucky Blue, at Hugh's Room on Sunday, March 2, in conjunction with Mansa Sissoko, a new generation singer-songwriter from Mali, West Africa. A griot by birth, Mansa weaves his music around the soul of tradition, singing and accompanying himself on the 21 strings of his kora.

"Road to Baleya" is a feature documentary film in which Canadian and Malian musicians come together on an extraordinary journey of musical collaboration and friendship. Produced by award-winning Canadian filmmaker Bay Weyman ("Spirits of Havana"), it follows the interactions between Malian griot Mansa Sissoko and Canadian musicians Lewis Melville, Dave Clark, Dale Morningstar and Tannis Slimmon as they travel to Mansa's home village of Baleya.

The film explores themes of music as a path to social and economic development and intersects with the very personal toll exacted by malaria in one of the poorest countries in the world. Both Tannis and Mansa will be joined by the wonderfully talented Lewis Melville (guitars), Dave Clark (drums/percussion), Michael Herring (acoustic bass), Michael Johnston (keys/accordian) and Jason Kenemy (organ), Jude Vadala and Katherine Wheatley (vocals), plus other very special guests.

At intermission, Bay Weyman (producer/filmmaker) will introduce and play a short segment of the film on full screen. The actual broadcast of the 48-minute version will occur on Bravo! Channel on March 11th at 9:00 pm. The full-length feature (90-minute) version will be broadcast at a later date.

Mansa Sissoko:

For the past fifteen years Mansa has been performing across Mali in villages and major centers like Tombuktou, Segou, and Bamako. He has performed on national television, for ambassadors from around the world, and always for friends who visit at his house. For five years he played with one of the Malian greats, Habib Koité. He has previously been invited to play in Senegal, Burkina Faso, France, and Canada. For 2007, while busy settling into his new home in Quebéc City with his family, he has been playing gigs at the Ottawa Folk Festival, the Alizé in Montréal, working with Jayme Stone, performing with The Woodchoppers at Nuit Blanche in Toronto, and even building new koras with the friendship of Ken Easton.

Here is a concert recorded by CBC radio at Toronto's Harbourfront Centre during the recent Small World Festival featuring Mansa and a number of other world music artists.

Tannis Slimmon and Lucky Blue:

Slimmon is well known on the Canadian music scene for years as a member of the critically acclaimed Bird Sisters; she has also lent her soulful, lyrical voice to some of this country's best-known bands (The SkyDiggers and The Rheostatics), as well as to the recordings of some of Canada's finest songwriters (Willie P. Bennett, James Gordon, Gwen Swick). Her solo career was launched in 2001 with the release of Oak Lake, and she has appeared on more than 65 albums over the years.

Lucky Blue is already making waves with a 2008 Independent Music Award for Best Song for the opening track, "Ernest, Charlie & Allan", and a nomination for Best Album. Producer Lewis Melville was nominated for Canadian Folk Music Award's 2007 Producer of the Year.

Rounding out Tannis's pure vocal tones and quintessential harmonies on Lucky Blue are the multi-instrumentalisms of her musical partner & producer Lewis Melville, soulful slide guitars of Ken Whiteley and Dan Walsh, the African kora of Malian griot Mansa Sissoko, the low-down bass of George Koller, duet vocals of David Francey, harmonies of Stephen Fearing, Scott Merritt, Shelley Marshall & Keri Latimer (from Winnipeg's Nathan), Jude Vadala, Katherine Wheatley and the Dust Poets, and so much more, including the crows of a Bhutanese rooster!

Ten original tunes and two Melville covers pay tribute to Canada's past in "Underground Railroad", reveal the gut-wrenchingly human side of war in "Edmonton", and blow wind through your hair on an attitude-changing ride in "My Bike". The album package is a visual feast of artwork by many talented artists from Tannis's community of Guelph and beyond, including a portrait by Mendelson Joe.

Tannis's website is at www.tannis.ca.

For info on "Road To Baleya", please contact Bay Weyman at (416) 588-7482 or bayweyman@sympatico.ca

(Bay thanks CIDA for its key financial support and the Documentary Channel for support of the feature length version.)

Shakura S'Aida's Bio [By Richard Flohil]

Canadians Proud of Shakura S'Aida--2nd Place Winner in IBC

Shakura S'Aida, fronting one of three Canadian bands entered in the Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee, earned second place. More than 160 bands, duos and solo artists, from 27 different countries, took part in the competition, held annually by the Blues Foundation; the winners were announced on Sat., Feb. 2).

S'Aida was certainly one of the most "international" entries in the prestigious competition, which will celebrate its 25th anniversary next year — born in Brooklyn, raised in Switzerland, she has been part of the Toronto music and theatre scene for more than 20 years. Her entry was sponsored by the Toronto Blues Society.

The winning band, Trampled Under Foot, is a trio from Kansas City. The response from audiences and judges alike was enthusiastic. Thomas Ruf, a German record label owner who counts Canadians Sue Foley and Roxanne Potvin [and now the Jeff Healey Blues Band] among his artists, said:

"I was completely blown away by the power and deep honesty of Skakura's performance", adding, "Wow! I haven't experienced such an energy level since (I first heard) Luther Allison."

The Blues Challenge was held in a variety of venues in and around Memphis's Beale Street; S'Aida and her band played at B.B. King's club on the historic thoroughfare where so much blues history has been made.

Shakura S'Aida's debut recording, Blueprint, was released in Canada last year and will be available in the United States, via the major independent company, Burnside Distribution, next month.
